Books were very unusual in one respect i.e., there were more items in book category than any other category. Back in 1994 there were 3 million different books across all languages in print. Amazon's vision was to build a store online where customers could find any book that had ever been in print and ofcourse no physical book store could ever do as there would not be enough shop space and it just isn't practical. the largest physical store might have 120, 000 different titles.
So when Amazon.com started an online book store they had more than a million titles in catalog which is something unique on online which simply couldn't exist in the physical world.
After reaching 1000 customers Amazon added Music and Videos into their catalog. Then they reached out to their customers for a survey on "What products they would like to buy online via Amazon?" Then they got a long list of all needs from their customers which gave them confidence to add more products into their catalog and rest is a history in Internet digital era.
